Asbestos: The Silent Killer That Could Be Lurking Inside Old Your Home.

Asbestos in residential construction materials was common in the late 1970s, proceeding through the late 1990s due to its strength and ability to hold up against humidity and scratching. Unlike mold, asbestos rests hidden, persistently hiding around the house, but doesn't announce itself. If you're living in an older home, you could be sharing your home with a silent, deadly substance. While you can tackle a home improvement project on your own, asbestos removal shouldn't be one of them.

The 5 most common places asbestos could be lurking in your home include;

Roofing and sidings

Most roofing and sidings made of asphalt and cement composites release breathable particles of asbestos when disturbed. Look for markings or product numbers to research if your house has asbestos.

Doors and windows

Asbestos products were commonly used in windows and doors of older homes due to their ability to hold a tight pressure seal. Removing or making a structural improvement around old doors can release asbestos dust.

Ceiling tiles

Asbestos ceiling tiles were a practical choice in the 1970s due to their fire resistance and insulation properties.  Common patterns of asbestos ceiling tiles are the 9 by 9 inch or the 12 by 12 inch. They are common in basements due to their soundproof qualities.

Furnace and Stove Surrounds

Due to its nonflammable and heat resistant qualities, asbestos was a great choice for shielding surfaces around wood burning stoves and furnaces. An upgrade that disturbs the furnace and stove surrounds should involve the help of a trained asbestos removal expert.

Floor coverings

Floor coverings made of vinyl sheet, rubber or asphalt are more likely to contain asbestos including the adhesives used to secure them, especially if your house dates back to the late 1970s and early 1980s. Removal of the flooring itself and the elements beneath it during a renovation or demolition project should be evaluated by a trained asbestos soil removal expert.

You can also find asbestos in pipes that aren't insulated but contain gray or white insulation remnants, especially on the fittings.

Asbestos removal

Inhalation of asbestos particles has serious health consequences. Demolition or renovating a home that is more than 20 years old can require asbestos removal. A reliable asbestos soil removal team should handle the project to ensure your family is protected. Any removal of asbestos should be documented as proof in case you need to sell your house in the future.
